Harris Substation – Providing Reliable Power to 2030
The University selected Stanley Consultants to evaluate the electrical system, provide recommendations for improvement, and to design the University of Texas at Austin Harris Substation upgrade.
The University of Texas at Austin is a one-of-a-kind institution. As the largest campus in The University of Texas System, it is a home to more than 51,000 students, 2,700 faculty and 17,000 staff members. UT is among the most highly rated public research universities with more than 90 research units and 400 patents.
Providing reliable electrical power to an increasing student population and ongoing research activities is a significant task. Campus growth was straining the University's electrical system and threatening its level of reliability. University officials were concerned that Harris Substation couldn't meet present or future needs, and didn't provide the necessary degree of reliability.
An electrical power surge or power outage has the potential to wreak havoc on research. With research playing such a vital role, the University opted to upgrade the Harris Substation to ensure that it would consistently provide reliable electrical service.
The University selected Stanley Consultants to evaluate the electrical system, provide recommendations for improvement, and to design the substation upgrade. The firm performed a feasibility study, conceptual design and detailed design, and provided construction administration for the complete upgrade of the main substation, including all of the switchgear, transformers and auxiliaries. In addition, the project included a complete replacement of eight Weaver Power Plant medium voltage switchgear lineups.
