Rehabilitation of Chicago’s Stony Island Interchange
Stanley Consultants was retained by the Illinois Department of Transportation to study the condition of the Stony Island Interchange in Chicago which included bridge inspections; crash studies and analysis; capacity analysis; feasibility studies; and drainage studies.
The resulting combined design report provided recommendations on bridge rehabilitation for the seven bridges that included deck overlay, deck removal and replacement, removal and replacement and complete removal of a bridge. Recommendations for the ramps and connector roadways included safety, geometric and operational improvements to improve lane balance. Infield detention was recommended in order to mitigate flooding to an undersized pump station located downstream of the project. A planned traffic maintenance analysis was performed that included reviewing and addressing the client's work zone safety and mobility policy.
The solutions resulted in over $12 million in project savings.
