Mullin Named NSPE 2005 Mentor of the Year
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Pat Mullin, a professional engineer with Stanley Consultants, was honored at the recent National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) annual meeting in Chicago by being named the NSPE 2005 Mentor of the Year.
NSPE is the recognized voice and advocate of Licensed Professional Engineers. The organization’s national mentoring award is given annually to the one member of NSPE who best exemplifies the ideal image of a mentor. NSPE believes that mentoring students and young engineers is the path for a successful future for the engineering profession.
Recipients of this award have established records of consistent outreach to members of the engineering field, including engineering professionals and students, over a number of years. Their activities demonstrate the support and developing of mentoring programs within their company, the engineering profession, and their community.
Mullin, a vice president and senior project manager who joined Stanley Consultants in 1973, has been a champion of mentoring and staff development for nearly 40 years. According to Dick Stanley, Stanley Consultants’ Chairman of the Board, early in his career "Pat recognized the need for more formalized mentoring programs to help our company members grow, and, thereby, to strengthen our companies capabilities. Working with others, Pat led the development of our Project Manager Mentoring Program." Stanley said the program is designed to incorporate formal training sessions with continuing informal and formal mentoring assignments to support developing project managers. "The program continues to be a highly important part of the company’s overall support of professional development," Stanley said.
Mullin is a 34-year member of the Iowa Engineering Society (IES) and NSPE. During his tenure as president of the IES in 1991 he challenged the organization to identify 20 practicing engineers to mentor freshman bound engineering college students during the summer months as these students struggled through engineering projects.
"Altruism is one of the main reasons engineers belong to NSPE," said Mullin. "Altruism is our obligation to assume an other-oriented attitude and to help people. This is giving back to the society for what society has given us."
