Stanley Receives Highest Honor given by Engineering Society
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Richard H. Stanley, P.E., received the National Society of Professional Engineers’ (NSPE) most prestigious award for professional engineers at the 2009 Annual Meeting in St. Louis.
The NSPE Award is the highest award presented to an individual by NSPE and is given to an engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the public welfare, or humankind. Previous recipients include former President Herbert Hoover, Dr. David B. Steinman, P.E., (founder of NSPE), and former Puerto Rico Governor Luis A. Ferre, P.E.
Stanley currently serves as chair emeritus of Stanley Consultants, which provides engineering, environmental, and construction services worldwide. He also serves as chair of The Stanley Foundation, where he oversees a private operating foundation directed toward achieving a secure peace with freedom and justice, built on world citizenship and effective global governance. This aim is advanced through conference dialog and policy analysis, as well as communication and outreach initiatives. Stanley is also the retired vice chair of the board of HON Industries Inc., a Fortune 1000 manufacturer and marketer of office furniture and hearth products.
A licensed professional engineer, Stanley is active in numerous engineering organizations and has served in many roles including past chairman of the American Council of Engineering Companies, past president of the Iowa Engineering Society, past chair of the National Construction Industry Council, and as a 28-year member and past chair of the Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council at Iowa State University. For his dedication to the profession, he has received many awards and honors including the Hoover Medal, the Anson Marston Medal from the College of Engineering at Iowa State University, recognition as a member of the University of Iowa Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy, the Distinguished Award of Merit and the Community Service Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, and the Herbert Hoover Centennial and Distinguished Service Awards from the Iowa Engineering Society.
Stanley holds bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering from Iowa State University and a master's degree in sanitary engineering from the University of Iowa. His dedication to his community has included serving as director and founding chair of Unity Healthcare, the community's vertically integrated healthcare provider, and serving as president and director of the Muscatine Health Support Foundation, which supports the development of the Muscatine area healthcare system. In addition, he served as the first president of the Board of Eastern Iowa Community College and past president of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce.
