The Metro Waste Authority (MWA) needed a permanent regional facility to replace the toxic clean-up days conducted annually for the collection of household hazardous wastes. The solution was an award-winning facility recognized as the best of its type by a North American industry group, also a recipient of the Gold Award at the Solid Waste Association of North America’s international conference. The 5,632 square foot building, located in Bondurant, Iowa, was designed for collecting, sorting, bulking, storage, and shipping of wastes such as motor oil, paint, cleaners and yard chemicals.

Stanley Consultants was retained to design the facility with many innovative features including an on-site wetlands wastewater treatment system, a waste oil burner for heating the interior, an exhaust heat recovery system, energy efficient lighting, and the ability to retrofit wind-generated power to the facility. Resourceful heating and energy systems were incorporated into the design to minimize energy consumption and to provide a comfortable work environment for the staff.

An important consideration during design was the use of recycled building materials. Fiberglass insulations containing recycled glass, and polystyrene insulation board with recycled polystyrene were used as the insulating materials. Counter tops, a locker room bench, a shower seat, and windowsills were all made from recycled plastic. The ceramic floor tile contained feldspar mine waste. Crushed concrete obtained from the nearby Interstate 80 repaving project was used as granular fill under the floor slab and crushed recycled asphalt was used as a base for the new asphalt paving.

This one-of-a kind facility in the state of Iowa was designed to provide a model for the use of alternative energy and recycled materials while filling an important need for the regional collection of household hazardous waste.
