GoodMike Stanley Stories

Mike Good's favorite memory of working for Stanley Consultants happened in, of all places, Vietnam.

"We have a strong history in rural electrification in the United States and in many other countries," says Good. "Dave Metz and I spent one summer providing technical assistance to EVN, the state-owned electric utility in Vietnam. The World Bank was funding an initiative to extend the electric grid into remote rural areas. We were the 'strings' attached to the World Bank funding.

After spending several weeks visiting various geographical regions of the country, Good and Metz were debriefing the chief engineer at EVN. He was not very receptive to some of the design and construction practices the two Stanley Consultants members were recommending.

"To him," Good said, "we were just a couple of Americans without any real credentials who he had to put up with in order to get World Bank financing. In an attempt to prove a point he was making, he grabbed a reference book from his office shelf. The book was published by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and could have aptly been called 'Rural Electrification for Dummies.'"

In a moment of triumph, the EVN official pointed to a sample staking sheet in the book and said, "This is the way it should be done." Imagine his surprise when Good and Metz pointed to the Stanley Consultants logo and Dave Metz's signature on the staking sheet. After that, our credentials were no longer in question."
