The U.S 60 / SR 303L Traffic Interchange in Surprise, Arizona, received an Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Arizona in its annual Engineering Excellence competition.
The highlight of the project, which extends for two miles on SR303L adding new access ramps and three lanes in each direction, was the widening of the bridge over US 60.
Rather than expand the bridge by duplicating the existing structural system, the contractor requested it be widened using precast girders. While this change eliminated the need for falsework over US 60 – and saved $1.6 million in construction costs, minimized traffic disruptions, and accelerated construction by seven weeks – it also transformed a relatively simple widening into a highly unique engineering feat.
The result is one of the most unusual, and now award-winning, hybrid bridges in Arizona.
