Active Interchange Operations Shape Roadway and Bridge Design
Heavy traffic volumes and aging infrastructure have long strained one of Palm Beach County’s busiest corridors in Boynton Beach, creating congestion, safety concerns and limited support for multimodal travel.
To address these challenges, FDOT partnered with Stanley Consultants to provide comprehensive design services to modernize the interchange and intersecting roadway. The project delivered 2.35 miles of corridor improvements, including the widening and resurfacing of 1.1 miles of Boynton Beach Boulevard and the I-95 interchange ramps. To improve capacity and traffic flow, the design added travel lanes and reconfigured the interchange to accommodate five through lanes and three turn lanes across the widened bridge. Additional improvements included new sidewalks and upgraded drainage infrastructure to improve stormwater management. Structural work included widening two bridges and constructing retaining and sheet pile walls to support the expanded roadway footprint.
Operational improvements focused on safer, more efficient movement through the corridor. Updated signing, pavement markings and signal systems, including pedestrian beacons, improved visibility and crossings, while intelligent transportation systems such as wrong-way detection and dynamic message signs delivered real-time information to drivers. LED lighting upgrades enhanced motorist awareness and pedestrian visibility and coordinated tree disposition further enhanced corridor safety and continuity.
Stanley Consultants continues to support the project through post-design engineering services, helping coordinate construction phasing and stakeholder engagement to minimize disruptions on the active corridor. Once complete, the improved interchange will better serve current travel demands while positioning the corridor for future growth in the Boynton Beach community.
