Flood Mitigation Master Plan and Systems Protect Cedar Rapids From Future Catastrophe
In response to the disastrous 2008 flood, the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, began an ambitious 20-year, $870 million plan to stiffen its defenses against the Cedar River. Stanley Consultants was chosen to develop a river corridor study that would result in a flood control system that would hold back a 500-year flood event. It would be the largest public works project in Cedar Rapids history. Subsequently, Stanley Consultants was named manager for the entire program and designer of the east side of the river, which includes six miles of protection. It includes a combination of flood walls, levees, pump stations, road closure structures, detention basins and 220 acres of new greenway.
