Lake Shore Drive Bridge Deck Replacement

Chicago’s iconic Lake Shore Drive carries thousands of drivers daily, making even routine repairs a challenge. With the Chicago Triathlon and Marathon approaching, the pressure mounted to replace a deteriorating bridge deck over LaSalle Drive. The 60-day bridge deck replacement was compressed into just 40 days to minimize traffic disruptions. To stay on schedule, the team quickly adapted construction methods and materials, keeping the project on track.

The team shifted from hydro-scarification to milling for deck removal and replaced the planned latex concrete with stone matrix asphalt. This change allowed for the first use of longitudinal joint sealer as a waterproofing membrane in Chicago, reducing installation costs and labor.

Stanley Consultants consolidated the construction plan from six stages to two, eliminating delays from deck curing periods and equipment relocation. Full-span scaffolding and double-shift work schedules helped the project meet the new timeline.

Despite the compressed schedule and increased construction costs, the project was completed under its negotiated contract value, minimizing inconvenience to the public and delivering long-term benefits for this critical roadway.
