SR-158 Rockfall Mitigation

The state Route 158 rockfall mitigation project addressed a growing safety concern along a key stretch of highway near Pineview Reservoir. Frequent rockfalls onto the roadway made it critical to evaluate the hazard and develop a long-term solution that would protect drivers and preserve access to the Ogden Valley region. Stanley Consultants led the engineering design effort, which included geologic mapping, a comprehensive rockfall assessment, preparation of a geotechnical report and support through final design and construction.

Working closely with a geotechnical partner, the team evaluated slope conditions and conducted targeted field testing to inform design recommendations. A mesh system was selected to mitigate the rockfall hazard. To support the design, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) captured a detailed 3D model of the slope, allowing the team to map the rock face with precision. This approach enabled an efficient, accurate layout of the mesh while reducing the need for time-consuming and hazardous fieldwork.

By combining advanced technology with local geologic insight, the team delivered a focused, reliable solution to reduce rockfall risk and improve long-term corridor safety.
