Rich History.  Bright Future.

"Few consulting engineers have a history as long as ours. More often than not, they fade away or are acquired by other firms as the founding principals retire or leave the practice.  Our continuity demonstrates that we have been able to manage leadership and ownership transitions while holding firm to fundamental values of excellence in client service and recognition that our people are our most important asset."
- Dick Stanley, Chair Emeritus

Founded in Muscatine, Iowa

Stanley Consultants traces its history to a storefront engineering firm established by Charles H. Young in the bustling Mississippi River town of Muscatine, Iowa.  The year was 1913, and Stanley Consultants' emergence as a global engineering consulting firm with a world-class reputation was years in the future.  Charles H. Young's decision that year to hang out his shingle as Central States Engineering Company was the foundation stone of what would become Stanley Consultants.

In 1932, C. Maxwell Stanley joined Charles Young and the firm was renamed Young and Stanley, Inc.  The firm was growing and the company began to stretch geographically.  In 1939, the firm's name changed to Stanley Engineering Company and was poised for a remarkable future.  With rural electrification, state roads and highways, sanitary systems, and running water in demand, Max Stanley pioneered quality service methods for clients.  These methods and the unique service practices were recorded in his book, The Consulting Engineer, published in 1961.  It became the foremost source book for engineers and others in the consulting industry.

Stanley Engineering Goes Global

Stanley Engineering Company was nationally recognized and entered the international field in 1956 and opened an office in Monrovia, Liberia, in 1957.  In 1966, the company name was changed to Stanley Consultants, Inc., to better reflect the growing number of services provided.  Client needs exceeded pure engineering.  Architects, economists, construction services managers, and planners were among the many new service providers.

Stanley Consultants is a member-owned firm. Max referred to employees as "members" and encouraged ownership through the purchase of shares in the company.

Southwest and Southeast Expansion

In the 1980s, Stanley Consultants expanded to the Southwest and Southeast.  The company continued to change, entering the environmental and design-build fields.  In the years that followed, the company's growth was fueled by significant contract awards to serve Federal clients and international infrastructure development.  Throughout its history, Stanley Consultants' success has been a result of its member expertise, flexibility and willingness to "go where our clients need us."
