About the Project
Managing incident responses sets new safety standards in I-25 major project
Stanley Consultants worked with its client, the Colorado Department of Transportation and contractors, to increase safety and improve response times for emergency crews during the prolonged construction of additional lanes in the heavily traveled Interstate 25 stretch between Denver and Colorado Springs.
As part of the overall maintenance of traffic plan, Stanley Consultants’ engineers analyzed and explained preliminary construction designs and schedules to best manage emergency responses.
The traffic incident management plan employed the following measures to save lives, setting a standard for the state’s future projects: Bi-weekly emergency responder meetings, two free courtesy patrol tow vehicles, a project operations center (the first in Colorado), emergency pullout areas, portable traffic speed monitors, smart work zone technology, portable variable speed limit signs (first construction project in Colorado), portable changeable message signs, a truck entering and exit system, a queue detection system and a travel time indicator system.
