Four Bridges Removed and Replaced in 37 Hours

Stanley Consultants and Wadsworth Brothers Construction teamed up to remove and replace four bridges in an unheard of 37 hours for Utah Department of Transportation.

Bridge replacements at Mtn. Delle and Lambs Canyon accelerated bridge construction (ABC), combined with bold moves by the Utah Department of Transportation, has forever changed the face of bridge replacement in Utah.  Incorporating never-before-used techniques, four total bridge replacements were performed on I-80 at Mtn. Delle and Lambs Canyon in Salt Lake City.

Utah Department of Transportation estimated the use of ABC techniques on the project saved 180,000 hours of delays, or $2.5 million in delay costs based on current traffic volume.  Intermountain Contractor magazine reported that the eastbound bridge replacements were completed in 16 hours, which is the fastest-known bridge replacement for two structures in North America.

The key was innovation within innovation.  ABC techniques and the self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) used to move the preconstructed bridges into place are the latest in accelerated bridge construction technology.  Within this innovation the pre-constructed bridges were constructed atop the same framework supports used to move the bridges into place.  This innovative design will greatly increase the life of the bridge deck and parapet elements.  This is the first known application of this technique, but it may become the industry standard.
