Master Plan Tackles Extreme Environmental Challenges

Stanley Consultants led the master planning efforts for one of the most remote and unique research environments on Earth: The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Developed for Leidos in support of the National Science Foundation, this once-in-a-generation initiative sets a long-term vision for the future of the U.S. Antarctic Program’s flagship facility, advancing science missions found nowhere else in the world.

First established in 1957, the station is the southernmost year-round research station in the world, serving as a critical center for cutting-edge scientific research. The station had grown for decades without the guidance of a formal master plan. By 2023, with critical infrastructure showing signs of stress from extreme weather, shifting ice and aging systems, the need for a coordinated plan became urgent.

Stanley Consultants headed the Master Planning of the station, facilitating collaboration between federal agencies, scientific stakeholders and logistics experts. The goal was to chart a course for the next 35 to 50 years of scientific exploration and infrastructure investment in one of the most hostile environments on the planet.

Charrettes and planning workshops allowed scientists to outline their future research needs, from next-generation telescopes and neutrino detectors to air quality testing and seismic sensors. At the same time, engineers and planners confronted stark realities — buildings being crushed by ice movement from below and buried by snowdrifts above, power systems vulnerable to outages in sub-zero conditions and material supply chains that demand extraordinary planning and cost.

Our team balanced ambitious scientific goals with technical feasibility, budget constraints and environmental challenges unique to the South Pole. The resulting master plan has a flexible framework for phased development, addressing both urgent infrastructure needs and long-term aspirations, from interconnected research facilities to energy strategies designed to survive months of polar darkness.
