Nikiski Generation Plant Combined Cycle Conversion

When the Homer Electric Association (HEA) developed its Independent Light Program, their goal was to provide independently owned power by December 31, 2013. Since the 1960’s they have purchased a portion of their power needs from another association.

As a component of reaching their goal, HEA proposed expanding and converting their simple cycle cogeneration power plant in Nikiski, Alaska to combined cycle operation . By the end of April 2011, HEA broke ground on the Nikiski Combined Cycle Conversion project. New generation was added to produce an additional 20 megawatts by sending steam generated in the cogeneration facilities Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) to a new Steam Turbine Generator (STG). With the STG addition, the plant increased electrical power production to a total of 60 megawatts, without increasing natural gas usage or fuel costs. If needed, the plant can produce up to 80 megawatts by duct firing the HRSG to increase steam production, which could be needed to meet the demands during Alaska’s harsh winters.

Stanley Consultants was the design engineer for this combined cycle conversion project and provided select onsite and office construction administrative services.
