About the Project

Assessing Climate Impact on the Global Cruise Industry

Travel companies of all types depend on offering customers vacations with specific conditions. Whether it's the tropical climate of Hawaii, the chilly weather of Alaska, or the sunny skies of the Mediterranean, weather plays a crucial role in the vacation experience. For cruise lines, environmental changes pose a threat to stability and raise concerns about sea level rise. Understanding these impacts is crucial for long-term operations.

Resilient Analytics was the physical risk consultant in this effort, with the responsibility of analyzing sea level rise and storm surge across 50 different global port locations. The team was tasked with delivering risk assessments that covered both port inundation and risks to adjoining infrastructure. A key requirement was to provide a timeline of projected impacts to aid in the long-term planning of voyages.

Resilient Analytics focused on inundation mapping and infrastructure evaluation to analyze the potential impacts of sea level rise, both alone and combined with storm surge, for each location. The most at-risk locations were spotlighted with timeframes and scenarios where severe impacts might occur. Evaluations that included investment in port infrastructure enhanced the overall risk assessment.
