Rising Heat Poses School Safety Risks Nationwide

Rising temperatures are creating challenging classroom conditions across the United States. While news stories about school districts closing early due to heat are gaining attention, the national scale of the issue in terms of potential costs to schools has been largely overlooked. This study was initiated to address this gap by examining the cooling needs of 93,000 public K-12 schools in the United States.

Resilient Analytics was the consultant responsible for determining the local and national costs of addressing cooling needs within K-12 schools. The team was tasked with delivering adaptation cost estimates for each school district, county and state. This involved identifying where new cooling systems were needed, where existing systems required upgrades and calculating the ongoing operation and maintenance costs.

Resilient Analytics assessed which schools were likely designed with or without cooling systems and the conditions these systems were intended to meet. They modeled the needs of each school based on the number of students and the specific school location. This analysis resulted in a $100 million cost estimate for installations and projected increased operation and maintenance costs for every state.
