Reciprocating Engines: Powering the Future

August 5, 2025

As the digital landscape continues to expand, power demands are reaching unprecedented levels. Various industries, including industrial facilities, district energy providers, municipalities, cooperatives and utilities, all need robust and efficient power solutions to keep their critical operations running smoothly. With new technologies like artificial intelligence and more data centers on the rise, the need for power generation is increasing at an even faster rate. Reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) power plants are emerging as a key solution, offering fast-starting capabilities, redundancy, fuel flexibility and higher efficiency to meet the power needs of tomorrow.

Stanley Consultants has a proven track record in the development and implementation of RICE power plants. Our expertise spans from project planning and detailed design to construction and commissioning, enabling clients to have access to critical backup and prime power loads. We consistently support fast-paced, speed-to-market projects, allowing clients to quickly scale their operations to meet growing power demands without compromising reliability or efficiency.

The Benefits of RICE Power Plants

  • Peak Readiness - A key advantage of RICE plants is their emphasis on redundancy, which supports a consistent power supply during disruptions. RICE power plants can start quickly and reach full capacity within minutes, making them ideal for providing immediate power during outages or peak demand periods. This rapid response is particularly crucial in situations where even a brief interruption can cause significant operational disruptions and financial losses.
  • Fuel Flexibility - RICE generators can operate on a variety of fuels, including natural gas, hydrogen and biorenewable fuels. This allows clients to diversify their energy sources, reduce dependency on higher-emitting fossil fuels and promote the use of renewable energy sources, ultimately enhancing energy security while reducing their carbon footprint.
  • Improved Efficiency - RICE power plants are highly efficient, converting a greater percentage of fuel into usable electricity compared to traditional power generation methods. This efficiency translates into lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact, making RICE power plants a cost-effective and sustainable choice. Additionally, RICE generators use minimal water for cooling, which is particularly advantageous in areas with limited water resources.
  • Power Reliability - RICE power plants are flexible and can quickly adjust their output to match load changes, helping stabilize the grid and provide reliable power supply. This is particularly important as the grid incorporates more intermittent renewable energy sources.

Client Success Story: Quick start and low emissions fuel the future of energy in Kentucky

At the KYMEA Energy Center I in Madisonville, Kentucky, RICE technology is helping Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency achieve its power generation goal. The 75 MW natural gas electric generating facility aims to enhance and stabilize the local energy infrastructure by providing a reliable and sustainable power supply, while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources. The plant will utilize four Wärtsilä 18V50SG RICE generators, each with a nominal capacity of 18.8 MW, to achieve its power generation goals. Stanley Consultants is acting as the engineer of record, providing detailed design and ongoing engineering support through construction.

Designed for both continuous and peaking services, the facility can quickly respond to fluctuations in renewable energy availability, providing consistent power supply and grid stability. To minimize environmental impact, the plant will employ advanced Selective Catalytic Reduction technology and closed cooling water systems, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, aligning the project with sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.

Construction is currently underway, with commercial operations anticipated to begin in the summer of 2027, reflecting the commitment to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a model for future energy projects in Kentucky and beyond.
