About the Project
FDOT Uses Signage Instead of Excessive Curvature to Slow Traffic and Reduce Costs
The SR-9/I-95 at 45th Street Interchange project’s purpose was to convert a standard diamond interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) to better address the increased travel demands. During the value engineering study, we identified that right-of-way acquisition costs would exceed construction costs. We recommended an alternative way to slow traffic down by using clarifying signage to improve driver understanding of the upcoming travel movements. Our team enhanced the value engineering proposal by utilizing 3D true-to-scale graphics during the value engineering workshop to illustrate that required DDI geometrics could still be met, allowing revised roadway geometrics and project costs to be accurately estimated. The accepted value engineering proposal resulted in over $5 million of construction savings on the $33 million project.
