Sub-Saharan Transportation Study

The World Bank is making large investments in building and improving the transportation corridors throughout Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Anticipating changing environmental conditions due to climate change, the World Bank required an impact analysis of all potential and existing investments throughout SSA. This included the need for return-on-investment, regret and break-even analyses.

Resilient Analytics was the technical lead consultant in this effort to determine the economic costs of climate change in the transportation sector in SSA. The team analyzed the impacts of temperature, precipitation and flooding on paved and gravel roads. Individual corridor, country and regional impacts were reported as part of the effort to develop a total cost for SSA transportation investments.

Resilient Analytics customized its impact modeling to accommodate the need for multiple national studies as well as individual road studies. In an unprecedented capacity, Resilient Analytics modeled over two million kilometers of roads for individual impacts across multiple climate scenarios and time slices. The team delivered total cost, regret, ROI, break-even and adaptation results for 42 countries.
