Kirtland Air Force Base, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center and two stakeholder commands are leading the design of a new four-story, 168-room long-term-stay dormitory to support mission-critical personnel.

Stanley Consultants and its joint venture partner collaborated with multiple stakeholders in a weeklong charrette to develop a design that meets the needs of two separate commands while also serving as a prototype update for the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s “dorm of the future” program. The team continues to work closely with stakeholders throughout the design process to deliver a final product that supports both current operations and future needs.

Following the Kirtland Air Force Base Installation Facility Standards, the design balances cohesion with distinction. Multi-colored insulated metal panels add movement and contrast to the upper floors, while a concrete masonry unit (CMU) base grounds the building as a permanent part of the base. 

The original design featured a predominantly CMU exterior and two large standing seam metal roofs, but these elements were removed through an extensive value engineering process. The final design maintains durability and visual impact while offering a more budget-conscious solution focused on client needs and long-term functionality.
