About the Project

Thoughtful design improves tank access

The City of Crystal Lake, Illinois, sought to replace a corroded water filtration tank with a new filtration system installed within the existing water treatment building. Because of the tank's size, the entire roof on one side of the building had to be removed and replaced in order to extract the old tank and install the new one. Water operators had long wanted more headroom above the tank to ease maintenance of the filter.

Stanley Consultants provided solutions for both the tank replacement and the need for additional clearance. The new roof was installed with a lesser slope than the original and the building sidewalls were raised to increase the headroom above the filter. Additionally, the new roof's steel structure was minimized by using a structural insulated panel system (SIPS) and standing seam metal roof assembly, which met insulation requirements while spanning longer distances and limiting the need for structural steel support beams. Workers can now stand fully while inspecting the top of the tank. The extended exterior sidewalls use wood framing with closed-cell foam insulation between the studs and an EIFS exterior finish. The prefinished metal standing seam roof, trim, soffits, gutters and downspouts match the dark green of the existing building.
