Assessing Vulnerability of Florida Island Communities

Small island communities in Florida are vulnerable to sea level rise and increasing storm surge. These communities must be analyzed to determine if critical infrastructure is resilient to changing conditions. The objective of these analyses was to perform an in-depth examination of the vulnerabilities faced by these communities and to offer strategies for adapting their critical infrastructure.

Resilient Analytics acted as the climate consultant in assessing climate risks associated with sea level rise and storm surge. The team was responsible for conducting a comprehensive vulnerability analysis, examining the potential impacts on infrastructure such as roads, water systems, bridges and energy demand. Of particular concern was evaluating the vulnerability of existing seawalls to storm surge, given their critical role as primary barriers protecting the islands.

Resilient Analytics identified the primary threat to the islands as stemming from storm surges, which could result in up to 70% inundation by mid-century during a major storm. To mitigate this risk, the islands will need to strengthen protective barriers, possibly elevate access roads to bridges and design improved emergency evacuation routes. The team provided critical adaptation recommendations to enhance emergency access resilience.
