Crucial Interchange Completes Connection
The Arizona Department of Transportation contracted with Stanley Consultants to design the Santan/Price Freeway Traffic Interchange and provide post-design construction services.
The Santan/Price Freeway Traffic Interchange was a welcome addition to the Phoenix transportation system. Connecting the south end of the Price Freeway (Loop 101) to the Santan Freeway (Loop 202), this multi-level directional urban traffic interchange completed the connection between I-10 and Loop101, alleviated congestion, reduced commute time, and provides access to a new mall and the southern portion of the Valley.
Interchange drivers were blissfully unaware of the challenges the project presented. It was necessary to relocate numerous major utilities, including large diameter sewer and water, natural gas, petroleum, electric, and a crucial nitrogen pipeline. The relocation required extensive multi-agency coordination and permitting.
The complex design included seven multi-span bridges. A unique feature of the interchange geometric configuration is a "nested" diamond-service interchange within the directional interchange. It provides a freeway-to-freeway connection as well as access to the arterial street system. Stormwater runoff is channeled into ADOT's largest pump station, located within the interchange. Intricate and innovative construction sequencing and maintenance of traffic allowed traffic flow and business access continuously throughout construction.
