Provo Westside Connector Provides Direct Route to Airport

Provo, Utah’s Westside Connector provides a much-needed direct route from I-15 to the Provo municipal airport. Previously the only airport access was via a winding route through residential neighborhoods.

The 3.7 mile connecting road, which opened in October 2016, also increases regional mobility to the growing neighborhoods in southwest Provo and opens the entire west side of the valley to further residential and commercial expansion.

It currently has five lanes from the I-15 interchange to the 500 West intersection, and two lanes from 500 West to the airport.  The project was designed to allow future expansion to widen it to five lanes the entire length.  It features a multi-use trail that runs the length of the roadway and connects with an existing city path.

Deemed as a project that would help boost the economy, the $39 million project was 1 of 14 infrastructure projects nationwide expedited for environmental review and permitting by the Obama administration in 2011.  The project was a partnership between the City of Provo and the Utah Department of Transportation.

Stanley Consultants provided construction inspection services for project, which was named Project of the Year by the Utah Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).  It also received the 2016 Most Outstanding Projects in the Highway over $10 million category from Utah Construction & Design magazine and received a merit award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Utah in its annual engineering excellence competition.
