About the Project
Single-point urban interchange increases safety, capacity and livability
A single-point urban interchange (SPUI) replaced the 50-year-old partial cloverleaf interchange at I-19 and Ajo Way in Tucson. One of just three SPUIs in the region, the interchange moves large volumes of traffic through limited space safely and efficiently by controlling traffic flows from a single set of signals at the center of the interchange. The SPUI features southern Arizona’s first braided ramp alignment, which also enhances safety and traffic flow.
The attractive and high functioning interchange efficiently manages storm water and improves connectivity and livability for nearby residents. Stanley Consultants’ award-winning design also includes sound walls that provide a visual experience for drivers and residents, complement the neighborhood and pay homage to the area’s heritage.
