Haney, who will concentrate his efforts on Minnesota, the Dakotas and for clients nationwide, is a seasoned water professional whose career focus is planning, design and construction of water, wastewater, reuse water and biosolids infrastructure for municipal, federal, industrial and commercial clients. His professional experience includes working on large project and programs while at Stantec, HDR, Mortenson Construction and ARCADIS.

“Patrick is the son of a retired water utility director whom I’ve known for 25 years, and I’ve been watchful as his burgeoning career unfolded,” said Guy Carpenter, Stanley Consultants water market leader. “When it came time to build upon our established water resources presence in Minneapolis and expand into services offered to municipal water and wastewater utilities, Patrick immediately came to mind. He’s a go-getter, a solid engineer with experience managing a wide array of project types. He’s exactly what our clients need.”

Haney is passionate about water and nutrient recovery and how it can be accomplished in a carbon neutral manner. Among other professional organizations, Haney is chair of the Minnesota Section of the Central States Water Environment Association.

“I’m interested in water and nutrient recovery. Not only the one-water concept but the one environment concept,” Haney said. “How do we balance water and nutrient recovery without adding additional carbon to our atmosphere? We don’t want to add air pollution while recovering water and nutrients. Our focus is to innovate and implement technologies and processes that allow water resource recovery facilities to become energy neutral.”

A civil engineer by training with engineering licenses in Arizona, California, Colorado, Minnesota and Virginia, Haney said he was attracted to Stanley Consultants because of the firm’s progressive environment and its aggressive stance in the market. The company’s presence in the federal markets was also key.

“Patrick will be providing project management services for our existing federal and non-federal water resources clients,” Carpenter said. “As important, he will also be developing business with regional water and wastewater utilities to deliver the full range of services that Stanley Consultants offers.”

Based in the firm’s Minneapolis office, Haney admits to having a “nerdy side” when analyzing low-energy biological nutrient removal schemes.

“My career has focused on the design, construction and implementation side of our industry. New technologies, such as membrane-aerated bioreactors, are very interesting. I’ve done super-low phosphorous and nitrogen removal, but the technologies come with larger energy footprints. The concept of resource recovery facilities with a near zero carbon footprint would be a huge thing for our industry to accomplish.”
